Ashtanga Yoga, as it is taught by K. Pattabhi Jois, is meticulous and consistent in its practice. It begins by learning the Primary Series and practicing that until one is ready to advance. This is followed by The Intermediate Series, and then four Advanced Series. At the Yoga Zone we focus on the Primary Series, which aims at stretching, strengthening and cleansing the body.
Repetition of a sequence is part of the natural style of Ashtanga Yoga and allows one a deeper understanding of the asanas. The flowing nature of this style encourages a meditative state as movements and asanas are linked into sequences and one becomes familiar with the next steps.
One of the characteristics of Ashtanga yoga is the deep breathing, which heats the body from the inside and instils deep focus - but of course, being the Yoga Zone, we do heat the room a bit aswell. Stretching, muscular strength, fitness and internal cleansing all come through repeated practice of this and the other yoga styles we offer.
The class is accessible to all levels, from more advanced yogis to beginners and there are many variations or modifications available to students who require them.
“Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory.” – K. Pattabhi Jois
